And the Oscar Goes To…
On Sunday, March 4th, Hollywood comes together to honor the best of 2017’s films and all that is involved in creating those couple of hours of escape for millions of people all over the world… the Oscars. Red Carpet parties come together to view the show with friends and fellow lovers of all things film. Binge watching all of the nominated films is a good way to get an idea of who will win and who should probably just stick to their day job. According to the ‘Reminder List of Productions Eligible for the 90th Academy Awards’ on the Oscars’ website, all of the films must have met certain criteria to be considered for the nominations at all. There are 341 featured films eligible that were released in 2017; I saw two in theaters.
For the mere price of a movie ticket you can be taken anywhere, put into any situation and have every emotion known to the human race pulled out of you in just a few hours. You go into the theater to pick the “best” seats in the house, while your friend or family member stands in line for Twizzlers, nachos, popcorn and Slurpees. You settle into your seats and begin watching the previews for future blockbusters and flops alike. Then the magic begins. A couple of hours later, the lights are up and all of the fourth wall scenes have been viewed by the hardy movie-goers who remain in their seats to the very end, hoping to see more. As you leave the theater you keep a part of that movie inside you. Later you find yourself referring to it when the situation calls or inadvertently spilling spoilers during a conversation with a co-worker about the great film you saw over the weekend. It’s all part of the wonderful movie-going experience.
The Red Carpet…
Get ready to walk the gauntlet of mega-stars, cameras, fans and fashion-focused interviewers all while walking on a RED Carpet. Walk, smile, pose, wave and repeat. It has become the epitome of fame, glamour, bravery and possibilities. As kids we play dress up, mastering the perfect wave for our adoring fans of stuffed animals while walking the red carpet in our mother’s borrowed high heels. In a fake interview we tell our best friend who we are wearing and who our date is. The whole time feeling glamorous and lovely all because of a strip of red carpet.
Perhaps this year, you can throw your own Oscar Party and roll out a real life red carpet for your fabulous friends to walk on in their very best dress up clothes and share who they are wearing. This can be a lot of fun and easily done at a low cost. Go to your local thrift shop on Main Street, rummage the back of your favorite Aunt Shirley’s closet, or find the homecoming dress worn many years earlier that needs only minor alterations. Top it off by having them enter on your very own Red Carpet!
